Beautiful: With and Without

Madonna’s perfection cream and why mommy wears makeup…we’ve been thinking a lot about this at Femamom. I’ve confessed to loving makeup and to feeling conflicted about the message that has given my daughter, my son and yes, people I see outside when I’m wearing a thick layer of blue eyeliner to the gym (just kidding).

This collage of women intrigued me — what is the point of this piece, I mused aloud to myself, hoping my children would take the bait…they did. My daughter told me that the collage is obviously about women being beautiful just the way they are. My son said they’re all hot. With makeup and without. My daughter added, the whole piece just proves that anyone can be a model all they have to do is make a duck face (daughter is a photographer). Duck face= sultry pout.

I couldn’t leave well enough alone. Did my kids wonder what the models names were, where they grew up, or are models so objectified we forget they are people? And I added, for good measure, had they noted the overt sexualization of the makeup pics?

Daughter and Son: Are you kidding? We hate when you go all therapist on us and use that voice, we know they’re people and mom, sex sells. Do we have any ice cream?

They were done with my sociological subterfuge. I’m passing this one on to our readers, that’s you.
